Microsclerotherapy

Safe & Non-Surgical

Thread veins become more visible on the legs for a variety of reasons and can be treated effectively by a non-surgical treatment called sclerotherapy. This technique has been established and used by medical practitioners since the 1930s.

Using a micro-probe, an irritant solution is placed directly into the thread vein and then gentle pressure is applied to the area, closing off the affected capillaries so that the blood within dries up and the vein is no longer noticeable.

Prior to treatment a thorough consultation and medical questionnaire is carried out to establish that this treatment is appropriate for you. It is an extremely safe procedure which involves no more than minor discomfort during treatment.

Post Treatment

Afterwards a small amount of irritation occurs around the injection sites, this is entirely normal, with most people feeling comfortable enough to resume their normal activities.

You will be required to wear support stockings / elastic bandage for around three days after treatment, to protect the site and aid the healing process. A minimum of three treatments is recommended.

Microsclerotherapy Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on the size of the area to be treated, a single vein may require several injections, but the micro-probes used are extremely fine, and this involves no more than minor discomfort during treatment.

You will be able to resume normal activities after treatment, in fact we advise you to take a 20 minute walk immediately after treatment.

The reaction of the skin and veins after sclerotherapy treatments varies from person to person. There will be temporary redness and puffiness, which may last from a few days to a week. The veins will be more noticeable immediately after treatment, this is normal and a good sign that the treatment is working. Occasionally there may be mild bruising, and a very rare complication is the development of a small ulcer at the treatment site within 2 weeks of treatment, due to the escape of solution through fragile veins. This is more common in smokers. The veins start to fade over the next 6 – 8 weeks, the fading process is gradual.

You should maintain normal activities including walking. The more you can walk the better as this works the muscles of the legs and aids circulation in the treated area, which in turn promotes healing.

You should avoid:-

  • standing for prolonged periods for approximately 14 days after treatment
  • crossing your legs as this interferes with blood circulation
  • very hot baths and saunas immediately after treatment
  • sunbathing and sunbeds immediately post treatment
  • strenuous physical activity like aerobic exercise and weight-lifting for 72 hours after treatment
  • picking and scratching the treated area
  • alcohol and aspirin for 24 hours pre and post treatment

No is the simple answer. The satisfaction level of microsclerotherapy is extremely high and complications are rare and unusual.
